Joystick Interface images?

Mensajepor oracle_jedi » 15 Nov 2020 22:13

Would someone with the Lynx joystick interface please post hires images of the circuit board front and back.

Or if you have the real schematic please share. The joystick interface schematic on the github site is wrong. It shows IC2 as a 74LS138 with a connection to pin 17. According to my data the 74LS138 is a DIP16.

I would like to try to replicate the Lynx joystick interface.

Thanks.

Dear sir,

You forgot to introduce yourself! -shock
I guess many people around this site would be interested in hearing about the knowledge or expertise you could offer. The approved way is by creating a new thread in this subsection. -drinks

Best Regards,
Jaume

That scheme is completely wrong.
I have made a quick drawing of this (needs revision):

Well done. I'd like to make a joystick interface too. Please do share any gerber files and wotnot. -thumbup

(and a disk interface/controller - but that's probably beyond my ability!)

Thank you @Kyp! I download the file (for some reason it doesn't show any downloads but I did). I have Dip Trace, so I will see if I can make a Joystick interface from it.

@Mike - I have the Lynx DOS interface card and I just got some boards back from Osh Park. Over the next few weeks I am going to solder the components into position and then test them to see if they work. If they do I will make the project public domain so anyone can order up a batch of black PCBs. I am finishing up the Lynx disk controller and my task this afternoon is to verify against my real Lynx disk controller board to make sure I didn't miss anything. My version uses only 1 floppy disk connector, and is not intended to be used to repair a genuine Lynx disk drive, but rather to allow you use a Gotek or HxC with your Lynx.

Again, if successful, I will upload the project to Osh Park so that anyone can make their own Lynx disk-based system.

I'll check out the intro thread too, but the short version is that I have been into retro computers since they were new :) I have 6 Lynx computers, including two Lynx 128s, three Lynx 96s and a 48K Lynx. Besides that I have VIC20s, one C64, a Commodore MAX, a Sord M5, a TI99/4A, an Acorn Electron, a bunch of 8-bit Ataris including 400s, 800s, 800XL and 1200XLs, some STs and a few Amigas.

Great to meet all you guys.

Superb!! Great to meet you too. Amazing collection. Welcome to the community and thank you for contributing. -drinks

I'd love to have a collection like that, but space and money prohibit!

I hope to use a Gotek/Hxc with my Lynx at some point (Lynx 48k - recently upgraded to 96k +scorpion roms). Your disk design sounds perfect for my needs. So far I have made an RGB scart, and a new power supply (12V -> 12V/5V/-5V). Also trying to get serial input working (serial output is ok). And Tap/Wav conversions. Other interests: emulators. mods, programming, etc.

Cheers,

Mike.

Oh my!, that's a great Lynx collection! -shock

I'm eager to hear about your progress. I've built myself a Lynx DOS controller; but even after many, many testing, I haven't been able to make it work; so right now, I'm not really confident about the design (not mine).

Btw, that joystick interface sounds good!

Remember this is a quick drawing based on how the joystick works in my FPGA implementation. I can't be sure it works.
I don't have a real Lynx to test it.

Nice collection, a lot of felines.... 128 are very rare here in Spain.....and is also rare you don´t have Atari 8 bit XE series... -grin

Marvellous, Pete!

The schematic solves the 74LS138 mystery in the spreadsheet version.

Good to have you back. Hope all is well in sunny Wales.

Thanks Mike, sun has only just arrived in the last hour - be dark again in another 2 hours :)

I can probably get hold of the original PCB layouts - will put it on the list.

Re: Joystick Interface images?

Mensajepor oracle_jedi » 11 Dic 2020 06:16

Hey guys,

I got the joystick boards back a few days ago and tonight I had time to assemble one. They work!

There was a couple of issues. I got the 9pin ports on upside down, so I ended up having to hack my 9-pin ports to connect vertically instead of at a right angle. Also, the 40-pin connector is a little bit too close to the power connector, but it will connect, and this isn't an issue if you are using a Lynx DOS board.

Anyway I made some changes to the design to account for this, but I dont have a real joystick board to look at, so this is NOT intended to sit in a case. I dont think the ports would line up.

The bare board

This is the design with the components installed. You can see the joystick ports had to be adjusted.

I played Centipede and Pengo and they both played well. It is so much better with a joystick than the keyboard!

Gerber replaced with an update - see later post.

Thanks again to Pete for the schematic!

I've published the project on OshPark for anyone who just wants to order up one.

https://oshpark.com/shared_projects/yvWpRqPN

I know jltursan has advised me of a cheaper option which I plan to investigate for future projects, but OshPark has been fast and efficient for me so far, and is a good option when you need 3 boards very quickly.

Good work!

In fact I started some days ago my own design based on the schematics, I think I'm going to shelve it... :-D

So the revised schematic has the angled joystick connectors?

I was planning on doing this myself - to learn PCB design software, but hey, maybe I'll just order this! Nice work. Thanks.
